One would think that to achieve something as natural as a healthy body would be simple and well, natural. The truth is that it takes a lot of dedication, years of research and experiment to make sense of all the mis-information. It is a shame that being fit and healthy is so hard. I see people from my MBA class, very well educated and at the top in their respective careers, struggling with weight issues. I know how frustrating it can be for someone starting out new – there is so much information out there that it becomes infuriating to get answers to even simple questions.
In 2014, I quit my well paying corporate job to follow my passion in health and fitness. By education I am an engineer (Warwick University, UK) with a MBA (IIM-Calcutta, India) and now recently a Doctor in Naturopathy & Alternative Medicine. I have researched and experimented with diets, fitness programs, supplements, etc and know what works and what can be a total waste of effort.
I understand the physiological changes, the challenges, the fears and frustration that come with both weight loss and also weight gain. I have both gained weight and lost it to now be in a healthy weight range and low body fat for the last few years. More importantly, I don’t remember the last time I fell sick – touchwood!! I do have the occasional cold but I never ever use pharmaceutical medicines to get rid of these minor irritants.
Health and fitness are billion dollar businesses and the more confusion there is, the easier it becomes for clever marketeers to sell their useless products. Here is what I believe:
- Fitness and health are not expensive
- Fitness is not the result of spending insane hours in the gym
- Being healthy does not mean that you eat salad and raw vegetables (or that you skip you dinner)
- Running for hours on the treadmill will not make you fit or healthy
- Health is more than just physical health
I write about all this and more on my website here. The intention is to make it easier for people to understand what to do in their fitness programs – what will get results; what food to eat to gain weight/ to lose weight.
