Despite spending my early mornings in the gym, the indulgence of the last week is threatening to spill out of my once snug jeans. The leftover sweets and cheesecake are not as delicious as they seemed last week. My body clearly needs a reset. Every time I feel this way, I go for this easy detox which makes indulgent eating delicious again! Unlike me, being stuffed like a turkey might do different things to your relationship with food. But we all know when it is time to cut back. This easy detox program will help you clean up after a period of indulgence, so read on:
The purpose of a detox is to allow your body enough time from digestion to allow it to do some house-cleaning tasks. A normal water fast of 6-10 days is typically recommended for a full body detox and to really experience rejuvenation.
The Less Gruelling Detox Alternative
Even though the benefits of 6-10day water are not completely reproducible by any other means, you can still do enough even by doing this toned down version for 7days:
- Skip breakfast.
- Don’t eat anything till lunch time (Read More: Eat Carbs Later in the Day For Maximum Fat Loss)
- Eat your usual lunch and dinner – preferably homemade, else skip that meal too
- Don’t eat snacks between meals regardless of how healthy they might be
- Limit alcohol during this period
- Limit sugar intake during this period
- Limit caffeine. Green Tea is ok.
- Sleep for atleast 7-8 hours at the same time every night
This is a form of Intermittent Fasting where you fast between your last meal of the day to your next meal the following day. It is effectively 15-16hours of fasting involving a period of rest in which you sleep.
Weight Loss During This Detox
You will invariably lose some weight during this period. However, since you are giving your body a break from digestion for prolonged periods, and also consuming fewer calories, your body’s metabolism will invariably slow down too. This is temporary but is also the reason why you should not expect linear weight loss i.e. same weight loss day after day. Sustained calorie restricted diet is also a no-no for weight loss. Do not follow this for more than 7 days.
The purpose of this and any detox is not weight loss. Most of the weight lost in this way will almost always come back as only a small portion of it is actually fat loss.
Detox is to rejuvenate your body from the excesses which have been inflicted on it. The feeling of being stuffed and overwhelmed with food will go away in a few days as your cells clear the accumulated waste material.
Intermittent Fasting might not suit everyone and neither is it necessary. It is just another option over many others available to become a healthier version of your previous self. Some people will find the 1-3 day water fast more suitable. It is important to experiment and find what works for your body, lifestyle and routine.
